AG#25 Doting Mother – Oatmeal, Rye & Black Pepper Mild

Today I brewed a bit of a weird one. I like a mild and I love rye beers so it made sense to try making a rye mild. Additionally I included some lightly toasted oats and a few crushed black peppercorns (an idea which I borrowed from Randy Mosher’s Radical Brewing) Continue reading “AG#25 Doting Mother – Oatmeal, Rye & Black Pepper Mild” »

Northern Craft Brewers and Saltaire Brewery English IPA Competition

Last Saturday was the Saltaire Brewery’s English IPA competition in Shipley, Yorkshire which was organised by the Northern Craft Brewers and Midlands Craft Brewers. Thanks to Ade Chapman (Pdtnc) who invited me along despite me being from down South! My ‘Light of Asia – Double English IPA’ took silver which was a surprise and an honour. Better still, I got the opportunity to spend the day at the brewery, meet some fellow homebrewers and drink some seriously good IPA’s Continue reading “Northern Craft Brewers and Saltaire Brewery English IPA Competition” »

AG#24 Elemental Stout

Having brewed a number of fairly experimental or just downright lethal stouts, I thought it was time to brew a nice simple, tasty and sessionable one. I based it roughly on my NHC winning vanilla milk stout but without the lactose and vanilla. I added a little munich this time as I can’t get enough of the stuff. If it turns out well, it may end up as my stock stout recipe Continue reading “AG#24 Elemental Stout” »

AG#23 The Light of Asia – Double English IPA

*I’m blogging this post-competition partly due to not being able to give the recipe away early but mainly due to being unforgivably lazy.

This beer is being brewed for the Saltaire Brewery English IPA competition on March 31st. The only real rule is that the hops must be English so I decided to go with large quantities of East Kent Goldings and First Gold, American yeast and both English and German malt :) The name was taken from an Indian Restaurant in Andover, Hampshire Continue reading “AG#23 The Light of Asia – Double English IPA” »

AG#22 Stella Fusion

A well hopped low-gravity copper/brown ale? Brewing a decent low ABV beer has always seemed like a challenge to me. Lack of body is the main issue. I thought I could overcome this by using some crystal malt, a small percentage of oats and by mashing on the high side Continue reading “AG#22 Stella Fusion” »

AG#21 Old Black Imperial Stout

I’d been planning to brew an Imperial Stout for some time so the idea of having a mass New Year’s Day Imperial Stout brewday seemed like the perfect opportunity to get this going. Continue reading “AG#21 Old Black Imperial Stout” »

AG#20 Royal Albion Porter

I love Porter, I really, really do. It’s another historic style which has undergone enough changes that it’s hard to pin down what makes a porter a porter. Porter and stout have gone from being synonymous (stout porter meaning ‘big’ porter) – to becoming independent styles – and back again Continue reading “AG#20 Royal Albion Porter” »

AG#19 Black Francis

I fancied having a go at a Black IPA as they’re all the rage at the moment and, as a fairly new style, I like the fact that there are no guidelines and it’s pretty much down to the brewer’s interpretation Continue reading “AG#19 Black Francis” »

Kernel Brewday

Last week I took a trip to the Kernel Brewery next to London Bridge. Anyone familiar with their beers will know that they are more than a bit special Continue reading “Kernel Brewday” »
